Science and Superstition

Healing Art for Tomorrow Part Ⅱ
Written by Mokichi Okada, 1943

First of all, Johrei or Japanese medical art that I created has no use for any materials to cure diseases; such as machines or medicine. It cures them just by means of hands. As a matter of fact, a performer of Johrei collects and radiates the ether with hands, which is unique to human beings. In other words, Johrei begins with curing the human spirit by using the power of the spirit. Since the spirit is non-material, Johrei works invisibly and untouchably. Therefore, modern people, who are controlled by materialistic prejudice, tend to think that Johrei is non-scientific. Even so, once people receive Johrei, they will experience a wonderful curing power. They must be surprised at its strangeness. However, it is not strange at all if they know the fundamental principle of Johrei, which can be explained scientifically.

Needless to say, true science should embody the truth. It should be truth itself that is not allowed to include any superstition, prejudice or subconsciousness. In this sense, Johrei actually cures diseases. It cures them completely so that people don’t have to worry about their recurrence. Therefore, Johrei is a scientific method. On the other hand, western medicine therapy seems as if it cures diseases very much in terms of its theory and method. However, the truth is it doesn’t cure them at all. As for western medical sanitation and hygiene, they are skilful and accurate but people won’t promote their health if they carry them out. Look, the physique of cultural people deteriorates. That shows the fate of human decline, doesn’t it? This reality is far from the expectation that humans demand medicine. For this reason, western medicine is a kind of superstition in modern times, isn’t it?

Modern people always say how terrible superstition is. They also think that superstitions exist only in religions and traditions. As a matter of fact, there are superstitions in science even though it is thought to be the most progressing. People should know this fact. It means that people have believed what is not the truth as truth for centuries and it has gradually become common sense. People also often say that a disease is cured because a person believes to cure it. They mean that such a belief intensifies the healing effect. As for Johrei, however, it doesn’t need such an effect at all. The sick doesn’t need to believe Johrei at all when they receive it. Even if they continue to doubt it while receiving it, its effect never changes. Regarding this, I will tell you a good example as below.

I have a female patient whose husband became a minister of state twice. She was completely cured of the pain that she had suffered for many years by Johrei in a short period. Therefore, she came to put absolute trust in Johrei. She has a son who graduated from Imperial University and works as a businessman. He caught a cold by chance and continued to get medical care for about a month. However, his symptom didn’t get better or contrarily seemed to get worse. Therefore, his mother asked me to perform Johrei on him. He was diagnosed with dry pleurisy by a physician. When I examined him for the first time, however, I thought that he suffered from intercostal neuralgia. When I told him so, he got angry with me very much and said, “I was diagnosed by one of the most famous physicians. I trust him but you told me he was wrong. You are very rude! I will never get treatment from you.”

Hearing his words, his mother told him that he wouldn’t be cured without Johrei and urged him to receive it. He usually devotes his parents very much but strangely, he was different only in that matter. He said, “I obey anything you say but this. I just don’t feel like receiving Johrei for my healing.” He stubbornly refused Johrei. After careful consideration, she asked her husband to persuade him together. He finally gave up and accept to receive Johrei just for a week. An interesting thing is that he made a condition to it. He told me to talk nothing about his illness. I accepted his offer and in exchange for it, I also made conditions; he may go to see the doctor but not take any medicine. Then he accepted my offer. In this way, he received Johrei in a defiant manner rather than in a sceptical mood. However, I rather enjoyed that situation. If he received Johrei in a defiant manner, he would have no subjective thoughts for it. If I told him nothing about his illness, he also would never be influenced by any words suggesting the recovery.

As for his symptoms, he suddenly had a fever of over 40 degrees every day. He felt a terrible chill, had a night sweat like a horse and frequently coughed. Therefore, he was getting weak day by day. His physician in charge and a supporting certain famous doctor were very worried about him. After a discussion, they advised him to admit the hospital. However, the hospital was luckily or unluckily full. He had to wait until the room became available. That happened around the fourth day. It means that only three days were left for us. His mother and I felt very uneasy. She said to me, “If my son is admitted to the hospital as he is, I think his life cannot be guaranteed. Even so, if the room becomes available, I have to put him in the hospital. Now, the room is fortunately full. So, please bring his temperature back to normal before we are informed that the room becomes available.”

I did understand how she felt. In this way, I had to show how effective Johrei was. I heard that he always had a fever of 40 degrees and above at 2 to 3 o’clock in the morning. I wanted to see how he was during that time. So, I decided to stay with him through the night. That was the fifth day. On the sixth day, he had no significant change in his symptoms and we didn’t receive any notice from the hospital. The seventh day finally came. Fortunately, I heard that his temperature went down to 36.8 degrees. So, I was relieved. On that day, he had a fever of fewer than 38 degrees at the highest. Therefore, the physician decided not to hospitalise him. His temperature gradually went down and became normal. He was completely cured at last. I think that this case is the perfect example that includes superstitious matters. From this case, you would not doubt that Johrei is scientific medical art.

Here, let me explain his case from our point of view. At first, his symptom was a common cold. He had a fever of over 36 degrees at the lowest and around 38 at the highest. His temperature continued like that for about a week and then gradually went up. It became about 37.5 degrees at the lowest and 38.5 at the highest, which continued for about two weeks. After that, his temperature suddenly went up to 40 degrees and more. He consequently felt chill and coughed as I previously described.

In the case of his symptom that I examined for the first time, he shouldn’t have had such a high temperature. 38 degrees would have been an adequate temperature for him. Nevertheless, he had a fever of 40 degrees and more due to the reaction of taking antipyretic. Therefore, his high temperature would have gone down if he had stopped taking it. He would have had just a temperature that corresponded to his symptom. I explained those things to him and his mother. The physician examined him on the fifth day and told his mother a surprising thing; “I diagnosed him with dry pleuritic at first and it was almost cured. However, he continues to have a high fever of 40 degrees. This shows that his symptom developed and the lungs are deeply affected. Since he is in serious condition, he should be admitted to the hospital.” When I heard it from her, I laughed and said, “Your son has nothing wrong with the lungs. If the lungs were affected, he would have abnormal breathing. Since there is no abnormality in his breathing, the physician misdiagnosed him. So, please don’t worry.” Hearing my explanation, she was relieved. Here, I would like to tell you that this incident includes a big issue.

He caught just a cold first. Therefore, he should have been cured in about a week if he had left it as it has been. Nevertheless, the physician used antipyretic for him as medical treatment. Due to this, the reaction occurred and his temperature went up. Worse still, because of that high temperature, the physician misdiagnosed him with serious lung disease and tried to get him admitted to the hospital. If he had been hospitalised, he would have had his stomach weakened by the absolutely rest and continued to have a high temperature due to the reaction of taking antipyretic. Other than those, injections and compresses would have stopped purification action. In this way, he would gradually have got weakened and finally died. Today, tuberculosis is spread and many people die from it, which I think often occurs because of misdiagnoses. Oh, poor sheep! How could I save them?
